His Wife Buried Their Daughter Alive
PART 4 — The Cellar by the Lake
Police surrounded the hunting lodge before midnight.
I was ordered to remain behind the barricade with Caleb.
Then a gunshot shattered the darkness.
Officers forced open the cellar door and found Rosa chained to a heating pipe. She was dehydrated, injured, but alive.
Dr. Hale had been keeping her sedated.
He escaped through a rear window, leaving behind syringes, forged medical documents and passports bearing false names.
Victoria was nowhere inside.
Rosa was carried toward the ambulance. Caleb broke free from me and ran to her.
The sound she made when she saw her son was not a word.
It was the cry of a mother who had believed she would never hold her child again.
Before the ambulance doors closed, Rosa gave Detective Brooks a location.
A private airfield twelve miles away.
Victoria and Dr. Hale were preparing to leave the country.
Police reached the runway as their plane began moving.
Dr. Hale surrendered immediately.
Victoria ran.
I watched officers pull her from a drainage ditch, her funeral dress soaked in mud.
When she saw me, she stopped fighting.
"You neglected me," she said. "You gave everything to that child and your precious foundation."
"Emma is your daughter."
"She was always yours first."
There was no remorse in her voice.
Only resentment.
Detective Brooks placed her in the patrol car.
I believed it was over.
Then she returned carrying a black folder recovered from the plane.
Inside were transfer agreements bearing my signature. According to the documents, I had approved every stolen payment.
The signatures were forged—but the company board had already received copies.
Dr. Hale smiled from the back of another police car.
"You won't be going home with your daughter," he called. "You'll be coming with us."
Detective Brooks studied the papers.
"My captain has ordered me to bring you in for questioning."
I had saved Emma from her coffin, but Victoria had prepared one for me as well.
