His Wife Buried Their Daughter Alive

PART 3 — The Woman Who Disappeared

Rosa's voice began the final recording.

"If anything happens to me, Victoria Hart and Marcus Hale are stealing from Daniel's company."

There was a crash.

Victoria shouted, "Take the phone away from her!"

The recording ended with Rosa screaming.

For three years, Victoria had been transferring money from my medical foundation into companies controlled by Dr. Hale.

More than nine million dollars was missing.

Emma must have overheard them arguing.

She had recorded the conversation because Rosa taught her to use the bracelet whenever she felt unsafe.

My daughter had trusted a caregiver more than her own father.

That truth broke something in me.

Detective Lena Brooks discovered that Victoria had recently purchased a five-million-dollar life insurance policy on Emma. Dr. Hale had altered Emma's medical records, inventing a heart condition that did not exist.

They planned the death.

They rushed the funeral.

And if Caleb had arrived five minutes later, my daughter would have been buried alive.

A nurse suddenly opened Emma's hospital-room door.

"Mr. Hart, she's waking up."

I ran inside.

Emma looked impossibly small beneath the blankets. Her eyelids fluttered, and her hand moved weakly toward mine.

"Daddy?"

I pressed her fingers against my cheek.

"I'm here."

Tears filled her eyes.

"Mom made me drink the chocolate."

"I know, sweetheart."

"She said I would sleep until heaven."

My stomach turned.

Emma struggled to say something else.

"Mrs. Reyes tried to help me."

"Where is she?"

Emma's frightened gaze moved toward the window.

"The old house near the lake."

My family owned an abandoned hunting lodge thirty miles north of the city. Victoria claimed she had not visited it in years.

Detective Brooks immediately called for a search team.

As the officers prepared to leave, Caleb grabbed my sleeve.

"There's a cellar under that house," he said.

"How do you know?"

His face lost all color.

"Because my mother called me from there."

Then he played a voicemail containing three words: "He's coming back."
