PART 2 — The Boy Nobody Believed

Emma was rushed to St. Matthew's Hospital.

Victoria disappeared before the ambulance left the cemetery.

The muddy boy remained outside the emergency room, wrapped in a nurse's blanket. His name was Caleb Reyes. He was twelve years old.

And he knew far too much about my family.

"My mom worked at your house," he told me.

Rosa Reyes had been Emma's evening caregiver. Victoria claimed Rosa stole jewelry and dismissed her three weeks earlier.

Caleb shook his head.

"My mom didn't steal anything. She found medicine hidden in your wife's bathroom."

The night Emma supposedly died, Caleb had gone to our house looking for his mother. Through the kitchen window, he saw Victoria pour something into Emma's hot chocolate.

Minutes later, Emma collapsed.

Dr. Marcus Hale arrived before the ambulance.

He declared her dead without ordering toxicology tests or taking her to a hospital.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?" I asked.

"I tried."

Caleb showed me a bruise across his wrist.

"Dr. Hale's driver chased me. The police thought I was making it up because I looked homeless."

Rosa had vanished after her dismissal. Caleb had spent days searching for her, sleeping in an abandoned shed behind the cemetery.

That morning, he sneaked into the funeral home.

"I touched Emma's hand," he whispered. "It was warm. Then I saw the blanket move."

A detective entered the waiting room.

Toxicology had found a powerful combination of sedatives and heart medication in Emma's blood. The drugs had slowed her pulse until it was almost undetectable.

Dr. Hale had signed the death certificate.

Hospital security footage showed him leaving with Victoria less than an hour after Emma arrived.

Caleb reached beneath his dirty shirt and removed Emma's silver charm bracelet.

"I found this under your kitchen window."

One charm opened like a tiny locket.

Inside was a memory card.

I inserted it into my phone.

Emma's frightened voice filled the room.

"Mommy, why are you giving Dr. Hale Daddy's money?"

Then Victoria answered.

"Because your father was never supposed to find out."

But the final recording revealed that Emma was not their only victim.
