The Homeless Boy Who Stopped a Billionaire's SUV

CHAPTER 1 - The Boy in the Street
The egg exploded across Damian Cross's windshield.
His driver slammed on the brakes, throwing Damian forward against his seat belt.
Before security could respond, Damian opened the door and stepped onto the street.
A small boy stood beside the SUV, breathing hard. His clothes were dirty, one cheek was bruised and tears cut pale lines through the dust on his face.
"What is wrong with you?!" Damian demanded.
The boy did not run.
"You left us!" he shouted. "My mom is sick!"
Damian's anger vanished.
"Who is your mother?"
The boy reached into his pocket and removed a torn photograph.
Damian took it.
The picture had been taken eight years earlier. Damian was sitting beside a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby. Sofia Bennett, the woman he had intended to marry, was smiling beside him.
"Sofia..."
The name barely escaped his lips.
"Where is she?"
The boy pointed toward an abandoned apartment building three blocks away.
Damian followed him upstairs to a room with no electricity. Sofia lay beneath a thin blanket, burning with fever. Empty medicine bottles stood beside the mattress.
Her eyes opened.
When she saw Damian, she tried to sit up.
"No," she whispered. "You don't get to come back now."
Damian knelt beside her.
"I thought you left me."
"You made certain I had no choice."
"I searched for you."
Sofia laughed weakly.
"I wrote to you forty-seven times."
Damian stared at her.
"I never received a single letter."
The boy moved protectively beside his mother.
"My name is Noah," he said. "And you are my father."
Damian looked from Noah to the photograph. The resemblance was unmistakable.
He called for an ambulance, but Sofia grabbed his sleeve.
Before the paramedics carried her away, she forced out one final warning.
"If you want the truth, ask your mother why she paid me to disappear."
