The Homeless Boy Who Stopped a Billionaire's SUV

CHAPTER 4 - A Mother's Price

Damian refused.

The emergency custody hearing began while Sofia remained in surgery.

Margaret portrayed herself as a concerned grandmother trying to rescue Noah from poverty and instability.

"That child was living in an abandoned building," her attorney told the judge. "His mother could not provide a safe home."

Damian rose.

"They were homeless because Margaret Cross made certain no one would employ Sofia."

His attorneys presented the payments, altered paternity report and blacklisting notices.

Margaret dismissed them as ordinary business expenses.

Then Noah asked to speak.

He stood beside the judge's bench in borrowed clothes.

"Mrs. Cross says my mom couldn't take care of me," he said. "But Mom went hungry so I could eat. She slept near the door so nobody could hurt me."

Margaret looked away.

"I threw the egg because I saw his face on a magazine," Noah continued, pointing at Damian. "I thought if I made him stop, he would have to listen."

The judge suspended Margaret's petition.

Before issuing a final decision, however, she requested direct proof linking Margaret to the forged letters.

Damian believed none existed.

Then an elderly woman entered the courtroom.

Her name was Evelyn Price, Margaret's former personal assistant.

For eight years, Evelyn had lived with the guilt of typing Damian's false rejection letter. Margaret had threatened to cancel the medical care of Evelyn's husband if she refused.

Evelyn brought archived emails, recorded instructions and the receipts for Sofia's surveillance.

One recording captured Margaret ordering the laboratory to alter Damian's first paternity test.

Another revealed that she had transferred millions from Noah's inheritance into a private account.

Margaret finally lost control.

"I did it for Damian!" she shouted. "Sofia would have ruined him!"

"No," Damian said. "She would have freed me from you."

Police arrested Margaret for fraud, forgery, coercion and theft.

As she was led from the courtroom, Damian received a call from the hospital.

Sofia had survived the operation.

But the surgeon's next words stopped him from celebrating.

Sofia was awake and asking for Noah.

She had also made a decision about Damian.

She did not want him anywhere near their son.
