The Homeless Boy Who Stopped a Billionaire's SUV
CHAPTER 2 - Forty-Seven Missing Letters
Eight years earlier, Sofia had been a nurse at a clinic funded by the Cross family.
Damian fell in love with her within months.
When she became pregnant, he proposed.
His mother, Margaret Cross, considered Sofia unsuitable for a family that controlled banks, hotels and commercial property across three states.
Damian did not care.
Then his father suffered a stroke during an overseas acquisition. Damian left for London, promising Sofia he would return before the baby's birth.
While he was away, Margaret visited Sofia.
She carried a letter bearing Damian's signature.
It stated that Damian questioned the baby's paternity and would marry the daughter of a business partner. Margaret offered Sofia money if she disappeared quietly.
Sofia refused.
Within a week, she lost her job. Her lease was terminated, and every number she used to contact Damian was blocked.
She mailed forty-seven letters to his office.
All were returned.
One contained a handwritten response.
Damian opened it inside Sofia's hospital room.
The handwriting looked exactly like his.
It was not.
The letter ordered Sofia never to contact him again and threatened to take her child if she publicly identified Damian as the father.
"Why didn't you go to the press?" Damian asked.
"Because your mother sent photographs of men following me. I was alone with a newborn."
Damian looked at Noah sleeping in a chair.
"What happened to you?"
Sofia had developed a serious heart condition after years without consistent medical care. She needed surgery immediately, but she had no insurance and had been evicted after missing two months of rent.
Damian moved her to the best private medical center in the city.
Then he ordered a paternity test.
The result arrived the following morning.
There was a 99.99 percent probability that Damian was Noah's father.
Damian called Margaret and asked her to come to the hospital.
She arrived wearing pearls and an expression of wounded dignity.
When Damian placed the test results before her, she did not look surprised.
Instead, she turned toward Noah.
"You should not have brought that child here."
Damian's voice became dangerously quiet.
"That child is your grandson."
Margaret looked him directly in the eye.
"No, Damian. That child is the reason you could lose the entire company."
