CHAPTER 3 - The Hidden Heir

The Cross family trust contained a clause Damian had never been shown.

Upon the birth of Damian's first child, twenty percent of the company's voting shares would automatically transfer into a protected trust for that child.

Margaret had controlled those shares since her husband's stroke.

Noah's existence would have ended her authority eight years earlier.

"You destroyed my family for shares?" Damian asked.

"I protected everything your father built."

"You left Sofia and my son homeless."

Margaret's expression remained cold.

"I gave her an opportunity to leave comfortably. She chose pride."

Damian ordered her out of the hospital.

That afternoon, forensic accountants searched old company records. They discovered payments to a handwriting specialist, a private security agency and the clinic where Damian's original paternity test had been processed.

There had been another test eight years earlier.

Margaret had shown Damian a report claiming he was not the father.

The laboratory had been paid half a million dollars two days before issuing it.

Damian remembered the shame and anger that had consumed him. He had believed Sofia had deceived him. Margaret then told him Sofia had moved abroad with another man.

Every search conducted by Damian's investigators had been quietly redirected by Margaret's office.

But the conspiracy had not ended there.

For years, Sofia applied for nursing positions at Cross-funded hospitals. Each application was rejected after a confidential warning labeled her dishonest and emotionally unstable.

Margaret had not merely hidden her.

She had ensured she remained poor.

Damian prepared to remove his mother from the board. Before he could act, two child welfare officers entered Sofia's hospital room.

They carried an emergency guardianship order.

The petition claimed Sofia was medically incapable of caring for Noah and that Damian had never acknowledged paternity.

Margaret had applied to take custody of the boy.

Noah grabbed Damian's hand.

"Don't let her take me."

Damian stood between his son and the officers.

The order appeared legal, but his attorney noticed that it had been filed one hour before the paternity results became official.

Margaret had prepared it in advance.

Sofia began struggling to breathe as alarms sounded beside her bed.

Doctors rushed in and ordered everyone outside.

A surgeon told Damian that Sofia's condition had suddenly worsened.

She needed immediate surgery.

As they wheeled her away, Noah ran beside the bed until the doors closed.

Then Margaret's attorney approached Damian with an offer.

Give Margaret control of Noah's shares, and she would withdraw the custody petition.
