CHAPTER 4 - The Debt John Refused to Collect

John lowered his weapon.

"Take me instead."

Logan laughed.

"Voss doesn't want you. He wants the boy because Elise placed the original ledger in a trust under Noah's name. If anything happens to her, the files are automatically released."

Elise had built a final layer of protection around her son.

Grace cut the restraints around Elise's wrists while Mason moved beneath the platform.

John kept Logan talking.

"You were at the Iron Chapel when Noah arrived. You could have handed him over then."

Logan's hand trembled.

The truth was simpler than greed.

Voss had threatened Logan's estranged daughter.

"He said he would kill her if I refused."

Mason stopped climbing.

John looked up at Logan.

"Then give me the detonator, and we protect her too."

Voss shouted that John was lying.

But Logan had spent years hearing stories about the debts John honored. Slowly, he lowered his hand.

Voss fired.

Mason pulled Logan down as John shielded Elise. Grace dragged them behind a concrete pillar.

Seconds later, sirens surrounded the depot.

Before leaving the Iron Chapel, Grace had sent the ledger to federal investigators with the depot coordinates.

Voss was arrested along with the officials named in the files.

Logan surrendered and agreed to testify in exchange for protection for his daughter.

Outside, Noah ran toward Elise.

She dropped to her knees and held him.

Then Noah turned to John.

"I thought you were dead."

John embraced both of them.

"I thought sending you away would keep you safe."

Elise looked at him.

"Families survive together. You don't get to decide alone who must lose you."

John knew she was right.

For years, he believed love meant standing between danger and everyone else. Elise showed him that love also meant trusting people to stand beside him.

Mason returned the cleaned blood token.

"The debt is paid," he said.

John closed Mason's fingers around it.

"No. You protected my son. That makes you family."

Then Noah asked the question John feared most.

"Are the bad men gone?"

John looked toward Elise before answering.

"These men are gone," he said. "Now I have to learn how to stay."
