CHAPTER 2 - The Son Behind the Glass

Arthur contacted child protection services and arranged emergency care for Ethan and Lily.

Because he was their grandfather, the court allowed the children to stay temporarily in his home.

Ethan did not trust him.

He hid food inside his bedroom and kept Lily close whenever Arthur entered the room.

The following morning, Arthur visited Daniel at the state prison.

Three years earlier, Daniel had been convicted of stealing six million dollars from the Bennett Employee Pension Fund.

The evidence included transfers approved with Daniel's password and documents carrying his signature.

Arthur had believed the company records.

He had refused to pay for Daniel's defense.

Daniel entered the prison visiting room and stopped when he saw his father.

"You finally remembered I exist."

"I found Ethan and Lily."

Daniel's face changed.

"Where are they?"

"They are safe with me."

Daniel stepped closer to the glass.

"They were never supposed to be alone."

Arthur explained that Emma had died six weeks earlier. The children entered foster care, but they ran away after another child repeatedly took Lily's meals.

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had not been told about Emma's death.

"She wrote to me every week," he said. "Then the letters stopped."

"Why did you never tell me about the children?"

"I did. Emma sent you photographs and letters. Every envelope was returned."

Arthur remembered that his business partner, Victor Hale, had taken control of his personal mail after Daniel's arrest.

Daniel had worked as an accountant for Bennett Industries. He discovered that Victor was stealing from the employee pension fund through fake consulting companies.

Before Daniel could report him, the money appeared in Daniel's account.

"I asked you to look at the original records," Daniel said. "You told me the evidence was clear."

Arthur lowered his head.

"I was wrong."

"You chose the company over your son."

Arthur could not deny it.

When he returned home, Ethan gave him the old photograph.

"The back feels strange," the boy said.

Arthur carefully removed the cardboard backing. A small storage key had been taped behind it.

A number was written beside the key.

Emma had hidden something before she died.

That evening, Arthur and his longtime attorney, sixty-four-year-old Margaret Sloan, opened the storage unit.

Inside were boxes of financial records and a recorded message from Emma.

"If you are watching this," she said, "Victor Hale knows Daniel found the missing pension money."

Then she revealed something Arthur never expected.

Victor had not acted alone. Someone inside Arthur's own family had helped frame Daniel.
