CHAPTER 3 - The Brother Arthur Trusted
The records led to Arthur's younger brother, Charles Bennett.
Charles had served on the company board for twenty years. He approved Victor's fake consulting contracts and received part of the stolen pension money.
Arthur confronted him privately.
Charles did not deny it.
"Daniel was going to destroy the company," he said.
"He was going to expose a crime."
"The scandal would have ruined all of us."
"So you let my son go to prison?"
Charles looked away.
Arthur finally understood why so many of Emma's letters never reached him. Charles and Victor had controlled his office, his mail, and the information placed before the board.
They knew Arthur valued the Bennett name.
They used that pride against him.
Emma's evidence included copies of the original transfers, recordings of Victor threatening Daniel, and security footage showing Charles entering Daniel's office on the night the documents were planted.
Margaret delivered everything to the district attorney.
But Victor learned about the storage unit.
He scheduled an emergency sale of three Bennett factories. Once the deal closed, the missing pension money would be buried inside a corporate restructuring.
Hundreds of workers would lose their jobs.
Arthur called a board meeting.
Before leaving, he found Ethan waiting beside the front door.
"Are you sending us away?" the boy asked.
"No."
"Adults always say that before they leave."
Arthur knelt.
"I cannot ask you to trust me yet. But I can tell you where I am going, when I will return, and who will stay with you."
Margaret remained with the children while Arthur confronted Victor and Charles.
At the meeting, Victor presented the factory sale as the only way to save the company.
Arthur stood.
"The company does not need saving. The people stealing from it need to be stopped."
Investigators entered the room.
Victor tried to claim that Emma's records were fake. Then Arthur played her recording through the boardroom speakers.
Charles's face lost its color.
Faced with the security footage, he confessed. He admitted planting evidence in Daniel's office and helping Victor forge the transfers.
Arthur asked only one question.
"Why?"
Charles answered quietly.
"Because Father always chose you. I wanted something that belonged to the Bennett family."
Arthur shook his head.
"The pension money belonged to the workers."
The factory sale was stopped. Victor and Charles were arrested.
Then Margaret called from the courthouse.
The judge had reviewed the new evidence.
After three years in prison, Daniel Bennett was coming home.
