CHAPTER 5 - The Table With Enough Bread

Arthur followed Emma's request.

The Bennett Employee Pension Fund was placed under an independent board led by retired workers. No Bennett family member could ever control it alone again.

Daniel returned to Bennett Industries, but he refused an executive title.

Instead, he became director of employee protection and financial accountability.

Arthur did not return as chairman.

He spent his time repairing the relationships he had neglected.

The healing was slow.

Daniel sometimes became angry without warning. Ethan still hid crackers beneath his pillow. Lily cried whenever her father left the house.

They began family counseling.

Arthur learned not to defend himself when Daniel spoke about prison or Emma.

He simply listened.

One year after the bakery meeting, Arthur brought Ethan and Lily back to the same shop.

The clerk who had refused them recognized the children and apologized.

"The rules should never have mattered more than two hungry children," she said.

Arthur helped the bakery create Emma's Shelf, a section where anyone could take bread without paying or answering questions.

Local restaurants joined the program.

Soon, thousands of meals were distributed every month.

On Ethan's eleventh birthday, Daniel gave him a restored copy of the old photograph.

Beside it was a new picture.

The first showed young Arthur holding baby Daniel.

The second showed Arthur, Daniel, Ethan, and Lily standing together.

Ethan looked at his grandfather.

"You were younger in the first one."

Arthur smiled.

"And much more foolish."

Lily placed both photographs on the dining table.

"Now everybody is in the family."

Daniel looked at his father.

"I am not ready to forget what happened."

"I am not asking you to."

"But I think Mom was right. People can change when they finally stop hiding from the truth."

Arthur's eyes filled with tears.

That evening, the family ate dinner together.

There was soup, roast chicken, and a basket filled with warm bread.

Ethan took one piece for himself.

For the first time, he did not hide another for later.

Arthur bought every loaf in the bakery, but the hungry boy gave him something money could not buy: one final chance to bring his family home.
