CHAPTER 4 - The Father Who Came Back

Ethan and Lily waited outside the courthouse.

When Daniel appeared, Lily ran first.

"Daddy!"

Daniel dropped to his knees and opened his arms.

Ethan tried to remain strong, but the moment his father hugged him, he began sobbing.

Arthur stood several feet away.

Daniel looked at him but said nothing.

The court overturned Daniel's conviction. Victor and Charles were later charged with fraud, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and stealing from the pension fund.

Their seized assets restored part of the missing money.

Arthur used his own company shares to repay the remainder.

He also stepped down as chairman.

At a public meeting, he admitted what he had done.

"My son went to prison because criminals framed him. But he stayed there because I was too proud to question evidence that protected my reputation."

Daniel watched from the back of the room.

Arthur did not ask him for immediate forgiveness.

He understood that an apology could not return three years of freedom or give Emma back to her family.

Daniel moved into a small house with Ethan and Lily. Arthur visited only when invited.

He attended school meetings, brought groceries, and helped Lily learn to read.

Ethan remained cautious.

One afternoon, he found Arthur replacing a broken step outside the house.

"Why are you doing that?"

"Because it needs fixing."

"Are you trying to make Dad forgive you?"

"No. I am trying to become someone worth forgiving."

Ethan considered the answer.

Then he handed Arthur a hammer.

Daniel found them working together.

For the first time since his release, he allowed his father to stay for dinner.

Afterward, Ethan opened a final letter from Emma.

It was addressed to Arthur.

"I know Daniel believes you abandoned him," she had written. "Maybe you did. But if my children ever find you, do not save them with money. Tell the truth, even when it makes you look guilty."

Arthur read the sentence twice.

At the bottom, Emma had added one final request.

She wanted Arthur to finish the work Daniel had started and return control of the pension fund to the employees.
