Who Is This Kid?
Chapter 3: Mr. Kane's Mistake
Kilo did not shout.
That was what scared Kane most.
He simply stood on the quiet country road, listening as Ethan explained everything: the Mercedes speeding around the curve, the wind of the car forcing him off balance, the bike tumbling into the grass, Kane laughing from the window.
When Ethan finished, Kilo looked at Bishop.
"Camera?"
Bishop nodded and pointed to the nearest SUV. "Dash feed caught the whole thing."
Kane's face tightened.
"You recorded me?"
Bishop said, "We record everything around the child."
Kane looked from one guard to another. "This is illegal intimidation."
Kilo's voice was low. "No. Intimidation is using a two-ton car to scare a seven-year-old off the road."
Kane straightened his jacket, trying to recover his pride. "I am a partner at Harrow Capital. My lawyers will bury you."
A few of the bodyguards almost smiled.
Kilo did not.
"Harrow Capital," he said. "That's interesting."
Kane blinked.
Kilo looked at Bishop again. "Isn't Harrow the firm trying to win the military hospital security contract?"
Bishop nodded. "Final review is tomorrow."
Kane's confidence cracked.
Kilo stepped closer.
"You nearly hit my son, mocked him, lied about it, and then threatened me with lawyers."
Kane's voice dropped. "I didn't know who he was."
That was the wrong answer.
Ethan looked up at his father.
Kilo's expression hardened.
"So if he had been another child, you would have driven away?"
Kane said nothing.
In the silence, a police cruiser arrived.
Then another.
The first officer stepped out quickly, but slowed when he saw Kilo and the black SUVs.
Kane pointed at Ethan.
"That kid caused the accident."
The officer looked at the tire marks.
Then at the dash footage Bishop handed him.
After thirty seconds, the officer turned to Kane.
"Sir, place your hands behind your back."
Kane's mouth fell open.
But Kilo was not looking at him anymore.
He was looking at a second black Mercedes parked far behind the trees.
Someone had been watching them.
