CHAPTER 2 - The Message Inside the Necklace

Adrian took Noah and Grace to the Vale estate.

His sixty-seven-year-old mother, Eleanor, was waiting for them.

The moment she saw the necklace, she covered her mouth.

"I gave this to Laura when she became our head trainer."

Eleanor turned the pendant over. A line of tiny numbers was engraved along its edge.

Noah explained that his aunt Rose had raised him in a village several hours away. She told him that his mother left him with her for one night and promised to return.

Laura never came back.

Before Rose died, she gave Noah the necklace and a sealed letter.

The letter was addressed to the Vale family.

Laura wrote that she had discovered Victor selling the family's horses through false companies. He was also stealing from a retirement fund created for stable workers.

She planned to give Adrian the evidence.

On the night she disappeared, Laura called Rose and asked her to protect Noah.

"She knew someone was following her," Noah said.

Adrian looked at Eleanor.

"Why did Victor tell us she took Noah?"

"Because we trusted him," Eleanor replied. "He controlled the search and gave the police false travel records."

Grace touched Noah's arm.

"Did you come here to find her?"

"I came because Aunt Rose said someone in this family would know what the necklace meant."

Eleanor examined the engraved numbers.

They matched an old storage locker at the railway station. Laura had rented it two days before she disappeared.

Inside the locker, they found a ledger, several photographs, and a small audio recorder.

The ledger listed horses sold through companies connected to Victor.

The recording captured Laura confronting him.

"You stole from people who worked for this family their entire lives," Laura said.

Victor's voice answered.

"If you speak to Adrian, you and your child will disappear."

The recording ended with a door slamming.

One photograph showed Laura standing beside her car on the night she vanished. Victor's vehicle was parked behind her.

Another document contained payments to a private medical facility named St. Catherine's Recovery Home.

The payments began three days after Laura disappeared.

They continued every month for eleven years.

Adrian called the facility.

The administrator refused to discuss its patients.

Eleanor took the phone.

"My family has unknowingly paid your bills for more than a decade. Either you answer my questions, or the police will ask them in person."

The administrator became nervous.

There was one female patient admitted eleven years earlier without identification.

Her name in the records was Jane Morris.

Eleanor asked for a description.

The woman had a small horse-shaped scar on her left shoulder.

Adrian remembered Laura receiving that scar after rescuing a foal from a burning stable.

Noah gripped the necklace.

His mother had not run away. Someone had hidden her under another name.
