CHAPTER 4 - Eleanor Returned to the Arena

Eleanor entered the arena before Adrian.

For years, Victor had treated her like an elderly widow who no longer understood the family business.

He had forgotten that Eleanor still owned fifty-one percent of the Vale estate.

She ordered security to lock every exit and shut down the financial office's ventilation system.

The smoke alarm forced Victor into the hallway.

Police arrested him before he reached the stairs.

Some records had burned, but the estate's computer system contained backup copies. They showed illegal horse sales, stolen retirement funds, payments to St. Catherine's, and transfers to the company attempting to buy the Vale property.

Investigators also recovered messages between Victor and Thomas discussing Grace's accident.

Victor claimed he never intended to hurt her.

Adrian faced him across the interrogation room.

"You placed a frightened child on a horse you knew would rear."

"I needed you to sell the estate."

"You could have killed my daughter."

Victor looked away.

Laura provided a formal statement when her memory improved. The old recording, financial records, medical payments, and Thomas's confession supported everything she remembered.

Victor was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, fraud, financial exploitation, and conspiracy to harm Grace. Thomas accepted a reduced sentence in exchange for his testimony.

Eleanor restored the stolen retirement money using Victor's seized assets and family funds.

She created an independent board led by former stable workers. No member of the Vale family could control the fund alone.

Adrian also reopened the investigation into Grace's medical treatment.

Her spinal injury was real, but her doctors believed years of rehabilitation could improve her mobility. Adrian had avoided discussing that possibility because he feared giving her false hope.

Grace confronted him.

"You decided I couldn't do it before I tried."

Adrian knelt beside her wheelchair.

"I was afraid of watching you get hurt again."

"I'm afraid too."

Noah stood beside the white horse.

Laura showed him how to check every strap on its bridle. Her hands still shook, but the horse remained calm beneath her touch.

Grace watched them.

"Could a horse help me with therapy?"

Adrian hesitated.

Then he looked at his daughter.

"We will ask your doctors. After that, you decide."

Grace smiled.

Noah held out the horse pendant.

"I think this belongs to your mother," Adrian told him.

Noah closed his hand around it.

"No. She gave it to me so I could find my way back."

Laura had finally returned, but she and Noah still had to learn how to become mother and son again.
