The Child They Never Stopped Searching For
CHAPTER 5 - One Quiet Circle
Laura did not recover all her memories at once.
Some mornings, she remembered the songs she sang to Noah as a baby. On other days, she could not remember his birthday.
Noah stopped testing her.
He began telling her about the years she had missed.
He showed her school photographs, described Rose's small house, and admitted that he sometimes hated Laura for not returning.
She did not ask him to forgive her immediately.
"I would have been angry too," she said.
Adrian arranged counseling for both of them. He also offered Laura a house on the estate, but she chose a small home nearby.
"I want to return because I decide to," she explained. "Not because I have nowhere else to go."
Adrian respected her decision.
Grace began physical therapy at a center specializing in spinal injuries. Progress was slow. She learned to stand with support, but she continued using her wheelchair most of the time.
Laura introduced her to a gentle white mare named Dawn.
For several months, Grace only brushed the horse from her wheelchair. Then she practiced sitting in an adapted saddle while two therapists supported her.
A year after the incident in the arena, the family returned for a private training session.
There were no crowds.
Eleanor sat in the front row. Adrian stood beside the gate while Laura checked the saddle.
Noah walked beside Dawn.
Grace looked down at him.
"What if she gets scared?"
"Then we stay calm."
"What if I get scared?"
"I'll stay calm for both of you."
Dawn took one step.
Grace tightened her hands around the saddle.
Adrian almost called for them to stop.
Eleanor touched his arm.
"Let her decide."
Noah looked up at Grace.
"Ready for another step?"
Grace took a breath.
"Don't shout."
Noah smiled.
"I won't."
Dawn continued across the warm sand. Laura walked on one side and Noah remained on the other.
After completing one slow circle, they returned to the gate.
Adrian wiped his eyes.
Grace noticed.
"Are you crying again?"
"No."
Eleanor handed him a handkerchief.
"You are a terrible liar."
Grace laughed and leaned forward to stroke Dawn's neck.
"One more circle," she said.
