She Was Never a Maid

Chapter 1 — The Maid Who Begged to Leave
"I can't take this anymore."
Clara whispered the words while tears fell onto the marble floor.
Across the room, Eleanor Hawthorne sat comfortably on the sofa, drinking coffee while watching her struggle.
"Do it again," Eleanor said coldly.
Clara looked up.
"The floor is still dirty."
"I cleaned it three times."
Eleanor placed the cup down.
"Did I ask how many times you cleaned it?"
Clara lowered her eyes.
"No, ma'am."
"Then do it again."
The words were simple.
But they carried years of humiliation.
Clara looked toward the security camera in the corner of the room.
She knew it was recording.
She knew nobody would help.
Because everyone in the Hawthorne house knew one thing.
Eleanor Hawthorne was untouchable.
She was the wife of one of the richest men in the country.
Across the city, Daniel Hawthorne sat in the back of his car, staring at his phone screen.
The video had been sent anonymously.
At first, he thought it was just another complaint from an employee.
Then he saw Clara.
He saw the fear in her eyes.
He saw the way she quietly accepted every cruel word.
But what stopped him was not the abuse.
It was something else.
When Clara lifted the cleaning bucket, her sleeve moved slightly.
Around her wrist was a small silver bracelet.
Daniel froze.
He knew that bracelet.
Because twenty years ago, he had bought the exact same one for his younger sister, Lily.
A sister who disappeared.
A sister everyone told him was dead.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
"Stop the car."
The driver looked back.
"Sir?"
Daniel stared at the screen.
His voice was low.
"I found her."
The driver frowned.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at the crying woman inside the mansion.
"The girl my family buried twenty years ago."
