She Was Never a Maid
Chapter 2 — The Secret Behind The Bracelet
Daniel arrived at the Hawthorne mansion before Eleanor knew he was coming.
The moment he walked through the front door, every employee became silent.
Because Daniel was not supposed to be there.
He rarely visited the house.
After his father's death, he had spent most of his time managing the company and searching for answers about his missing sister.
But today was different.
His eyes went directly to Clara.
She was standing near the staircase, holding a tray of glasses.
She looked afraid.
Not because of Daniel.
Because she thought another powerful person had come to judge her.
"Come with me," Daniel said.
Eleanor immediately stepped forward.
"Daniel, this is unnecessary."
He turned.
For the first time in years, Eleanor saw something she had never seen before.
Suspicion.
"Stay out of this."
The room became quiet.
Eleanor's expression changed slightly.
Daniel took Clara into his office.
He closed the door.
Then he pointed at the bracelet.
"Where did you get that?"
Clara touched it instinctively.
"My mother gave it to me."
"Your mother?"
"She said it was the only thing she had left from my childhood."
Daniel's heart started beating faster.
"What was your mother's name?"
Clara hesitated.
"Lillian."
The room went completely silent.
Daniel sat down.
Because Lillian was the name his sister used when she was young.
Before she disappeared.
Before his family told him she had died.
"Tell me everything."
Clara looked confused.
"Why?"
"Because I think someone lied to both of us."
Slowly, Clara explained her life.
She grew up with a woman who called herself her mother.
They moved constantly.
They never stayed anywhere too long.
Her mother always told her:
"Never trust the Hawthorne family."
She never understood why.
Until her mother became sick.
Before she died, she gave Clara the bracelet and said:
"If you ever meet someone from the Hawthorne family, show them this."
Daniel looked at the bracelet again.
The small engraving on the inside was almost invisible.
But he recognized it.
A symbol he had drawn himself when he was sixteen.
A symbol only Lily knew.
Daniel stood.
"Your mother wasn't just someone who worked for my family."
Clara looked at him.
"Then who was she?"
Daniel's voice became softer.
"She was my little sister."
Before Clara could respond, the office door opened.
Eleanor stood there.
Her face was pale.
"I told you never to bring her into this house."
Daniel slowly turned.
"Why?"
Eleanor said nothing.
That silence was the answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
"What are you afraid she will find?"
For the first time, Eleanor looked scared.
And then Daniel noticed something.
She wasn't looking at him.
She was looking at Clara.
Like she was looking at a ghost.
