She Was Never a Maid
Chapter 3 — The Daughter They Tried To Erase
Daniel spent the next week uncovering a truth his family had hidden for two decades.
Lily Hawthorne was not dead.
She had escaped.
After discovering financial crimes inside the Hawthorne company, Lily tried to expose the people responsible.
But someone stopped her.
Her car accident was not an accident.
Her disappearance was planned.
And the person behind it was not a stranger.
It was Eleanor.
Daniel could barely accept it.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who comforted him after Lily disappeared.
The woman who told him:
"Your sister is gone. You need to move on."
Had known the truth all along.
But there was one person who could prove everything.
The old family lawyer, Thomas Reed.
Daniel found him living quietly outside the city.
Thomas looked older than Daniel remembered.
When he saw Clara, he immediately started crying.
"She looks exactly like Lily."
Clara stood frozen.
"You knew my mother?"
Thomas nodded.
"I helped her escape."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Thomas looked away.
"Because your father made me promise."
"My father?"
Thomas sighed.
"Your father knew Eleanor was involved."
The words hurt more than Daniel expected.
His own father.
The man he admired.
The man whose company he inherited.
Had chosen silence.
Thomas handed Daniel a box.
Inside were letters.
Photographs.
Medical records.
And one final document.
A birth certificate.
Not Clara's.
Lily's.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Protect my daughter. She is the last person who can expose them.
Daniel looked at Clara.
"You were never just a maid."
Clara lowered her eyes.
"I never wanted their money."
Daniel understood.
She wanted something more important.
The truth.
But before they could finish reading the documents, Daniel's phone rang.
It was his security team.
"Sir, someone broke into the archive room."
Daniel's face changed.
"What did they take?"
A pause.
Then:
"The original family records."
Daniel looked at Clara.
Because there was only one reason someone would steal those records.
They were afraid of what they would reveal.
And whoever was afraid was still inside the Hawthorne family.
