Chapter 4 — The Woman Behind The Lies
The family records were stolen by someone who knew the mansion better than anyone.
Eleanor.
Daniel finally confronted her in the old library.
For years, she had controlled every room in the house.
But this time, she looked different.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
"Why?" Daniel asked.
Eleanor looked at him.
"Because I was protecting this family."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"You were protecting yourself."
The truth came out slowly.
Twenty years ago, Eleanor discovered that Lily planned to expose her husband's illegal business deals.
She knew if Lily succeeded, the entire Hawthorne family would collapse.
So she created a new story.
Lily was unstable.
Lily disappeared.
Lily died.
And Clara was sent away before anyone could discover she existed.
"I never wanted her hurt," Eleanor whispered.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You erased her entire life."
Eleanor had no answer.
Then Clara entered the room.
She had heard everything.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Clara looked at the woman who had unknowingly destroyed her childhood.
"I spent my whole life wondering why my mother was afraid."
Her voice trembled.
"Now I know."
Eleanor looked away.
"I was wrong."
But it was too late.
Because Daniel had already sent everything to the authorities.
The documents.
The letters.
The evidence.
All of it.
However, Eleanor had one final weapon.
She smiled slightly.
"You think this ends with me?"
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
She looked toward the window.
"Your brother knows."
Daniel froze.
He had no brother.
At least, that was what he believed.
Until Eleanor revealed the final secret.
Years ago, Daniel's father had another child.
A child hidden from the family.
A child who had been helping Eleanor control the company from the shadows.
Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice came through.
"Hello, brother."
Daniel's blood went cold.
"Who are you?"
The man laughed.
"The person who should have inherited everything."
