The Girl Who Threw the Cake at Ethan's Sixth Birthday

CHAPTER 1 - THE CAKE ON THE FLOOR
Cream slid down the white tablecloth. Broken china glittered across the ballroom floor.
Ethan still held the silver cake knife in his small hand, frozen in place, while guests stared at the ruined double-layer cake as if they had witnessed a crime.
Richard Hale, Ethan's father, dropped to one knee in front of the child who had caused it.
Lily was shaking in her mother's arms. Her mother, Ana, was still kneeling in the mess, one arm wrapped around her daughter as if she could shield her from every rich and angry person in the room.
Richard's face had been dark with fury only seconds before.
Then he saw the cake.
Crushed in the frosting were chopped peanuts.
His voice changed at once. "One bite could kill him."
A murmur spread through the room. Ethan's grandmother gasped and rushed to pull the boy away from the table. Richard stood so fast his chair tipped over behind him.
He looked at Lily again. "Who did it?"
Lily stared past his shoulder instead of answering.
Richard turned.
Vanessa, his wife, stood near the ballroom exit in a red dress, one hand already on the brass handle. Her face had gone pale, but her chin remained lifted.
Lily pressed herself harder into her mother's side. "I can't say," she whispered. "They'll hurt my mom."
Ana's head snapped up. "Who told you that?"
Vanessa let go of the handle and gave a brittle little laugh. "This is absurd. She's a frightened child. She probably saw peanuts in the kitchen and panicked."
Richard did not move.
Neither did Ana.
Then the pastry chef pushed through the crowd, white coat stained with cream, and said in a trembling voice, "Sir... I did not make that cake with peanuts. Someone switched the top layer ten minutes ago."
And on the floor beside the wrecked cake, half hidden under frosting, Richard saw a gold bracelet clasp shaped like a red enamel rose.
Vanessa was no longer wearing hers.
