The Girl Who Threw the Cake at Ethan's Sixth Birthday
CHAPTER 2 - THE WOMAN IN RED
"Don't ask my daughter to save your son and then call her a liar."
Richard ordered the doors closed.
No one left the ballroom.
Guests who had arrived for champagne and birthday candles now stood in clusters, whispering into their hands. Ethan had been taken upstairs with his grandmother and the family doctor, who carried an EpiPen from the emergency kit the house staff always kept nearby. Richard wanted him checked anyway. He knew too well how quickly a child's throat could close.
Vanessa folded her arms. "You are humiliating me in front of half the city."
Richard ignored her. His eyes stayed on the bracelet in his hand. Red enamel rose. Tiny scratch near the clasp. He had bought it in Charleston on their anniversary.
"It's mine," Vanessa said. "That proves nothing."
Ana finally stood, pulling Lily behind her. Cream streaked the hem of her plain black work dress. Her voice shook, but only from fear, not weakness. "My daughter doesn't invent things."
Vanessa turned on her. "Your daughter attacked my son's birthday cake."
"She saved him," Ana shot back.
The pastry chef, Mr. Bell, wiped his forehead. "I left the cake in the service pantry for seven minutes. When I returned, the decorations looked the same. I thought nothing had changed."
Richard looked at Lily. He softened his tone. "Did you see who touched the cake?"
Lily bit her lip. Her eyes flicked to her mother. "A lady in red."
Vanessa gave a sharp exhale. "There were three women in red."
That was true. Two guests wore wine-colored gowns. But Lily shook her head.
"Not just red," she whispered. "Red with roses."
Everyone looked at Vanessa's dress. Tiny embroidered roses climbed one shoulder.
Vanessa took a step back. "This is insanity."
Then a voice came from the doorway.
"No," said an older woman Richard had not seen in fifteen years. "What's insane is pretending this family doesn't already know what Vanessa is capable of."
Richard stared at her.
"Marlene?" he said.
His ex-wife walked into the room, and Ethan's mother had returned on his son's sixth birthday.
