The Girl Who Threw the Cake at Ethan's Sixth Birthday
CHAPTER 4 - THE SECOND LOSS
"I was not trying to kill your son. I was trying to stop losing mine."
They moved to Richard's study.
The guests were sent home with mumbled apologies. Upstairs, Ethan slept at last, exhausted from fear and the antihistamine the doctor had given him. Down the hall, a housekeeper sat outside the child's room in case he woke.
In the study, the truth had nowhere to hide.
Richard stood by the fireplace. Marlene sat rigid in a leather chair. Ana kept one hand on Lily's shoulder. Vanessa remained standing, still in that red dress, as if refusing to surrender even now.
Richard placed the broken rose bracelet on the desk between them. "Start talking."
Vanessa looked at it for a long time.
Then she said, "I didn't put the peanuts in the cake to kill Ethan."
No one spoke.
Her voice cracked for the first time that night. "I switched the top layer because I knew the party would stop. I knew you would send everyone away. I knew you'd finally listen to me."
Richard stared. "Listen to what?"
She laughed once, harsh and broken. "To the fact that our son has been having dizzy spells for months. To the bruises. To the blood test I found in Dr. Segal's file this morning."
Richard went still.
Vanessa reached into her purse and threw a folded paper onto the desk.
Leukemia panel. Abnormal results.
Ana inhaled sharply.
"I begged Dr. Segal to tell you before the party," Vanessa said. "He said we needed more testing. He said not to alarm Ethan. You were obsessed with this perfect birthday after... after Jonah. So I made sure nothing would stay perfect."
Marlene stood up. "You terrorized a child to make a point?"
Vanessa turned to Lily, tears finally spilling. "I never meant for you to see me. And I never meant to frighten you."
Lily pressed into her mother.
Richard picked up the paper with trembling hands. "This test is from three days ago."
"Yes," Vanessa said. "And there is more. Dr. Segal is not answering because he was arrested this afternoon for altering patient records. I found that out an hour before the cake was cut."
Richard looked from the report to Ethan's closed study photo on the shelf, then back to Vanessa.
Their son was in danger.
And the doctor they trusted might have hidden it.
Then the intercom buzzed.
The housekeeper's frightened voice came through. "Mr. Hale, Ethan is awake. He's asking for Lily. And he says his nose won't stop bleeding."
