The Girl Who Threw the Cake at Ethan's Sixth Birthday

CHAPTER 3 - WHAT MARLENE KNEW

"I left you, Richard. I did not leave my son."

The ballroom seemed too small for the past.

Marlene Grayson stood in a camel coat, silver threaded through her dark hair, her overnight bag still in hand. She had Richard's old steadiness in her face and Ethan's eyes in miniature, though Ethan had no memory of her. She had given birth to their first child, Jonah, twenty-eight years earlier.

Jonah had died at seven from an allergic reaction during a school trip.

That loss had split their marriage down the middle.

Richard had buried himself in work. Marlene had buried herself in grief. By the time they looked at each other again, there was nothing left to save.

Vanessa had entered his life two years later.

Now Marlene looked directly at Vanessa. "When I heard Ethan had the same allergy Jonah had, I prayed someone in this house took it seriously."

Vanessa's mouth tightened. "You have no right to walk in here and accuse me."

"I didn't accuse you," Marlene said calmly. "Not yet."

Richard felt cold all over. "Why are you here?"

Marlene reached into her bag and pulled out an envelope. "Because I got this yesterday. No return address."

Inside was a copy of Ethan's birthday invitation and one sentence typed on plain paper.

Ask Vanessa what happened the day Jonah died.

Richard read it twice.

Vanessa moved toward him. "This is sick."

But Ana was looking at her in a different way now, as if old fear had found a shape. Richard noticed it.

He turned to Ana. "Tell me everything."

Ana hesitated. Then she nodded once. "Two weeks ago, Mrs. Hale came into the staff kitchen while Lily was helping me fold napkins. She told Lily that if she ever repeated what she saw in this house, I would lose my job and we would lose our apartment."

Richard's voice dropped. "What did Lily see?"

Lily started crying before she answered.

"At school pickup," she whispered, "Ethan gave me a cookie, and Mrs. Hale slapped it out of my hand and said bad children don't touch things made for her family."

Ana closed her eyes in shame and rage.

Then Marlene said the one thing that changed everything.

"Jonah said that too," she said softly. "The day he died. He told me, 'The lady said not to tell.'"

Richard looked at Vanessa as if he had never seen her before.

And Vanessa said, very quietly, "You don't know what Jonah saw."
