CHAPTER 1 — The Matching Hair Clip
"Hey, don't touch me!"
Victoria Hale pushed the boy's hand away.
The outdoor cafe fell quiet.
The child did not run. He stared at the diamond hair clip above Victoria's ear and pointed excitedly.
"The same hair clip."
Victoria touched it.
"What are you talking about?"
The boy opened his dirty hand.
An identical diamond clip rested in his palm.
"My mom said I'd find you here."
Victoria stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.
"Your mom?"
The clips had been created for Victoria and her twin sister, Elena, on their eighteenth birthday. Each contained eight diamonds surrounding a tiny sapphire.
Elena had disappeared seven years earlier after her car plunged into a river.
She had been three months pregnant.
Police never recovered her body.
Victoria's husband, Conrad, identified a damaged hair clip found inside the wreckage. Victoria accepted it as proof Elena was gone.
Until now.
"What's your mother's name?" she asked.
"Elena."
The boy said his name was Lucas. He and his mother had been moving between shelters for months. That morning, Elena dressed in borrowed clothes and told him to approach Victoria if she appeared at the cafe.
Victoria followed his gaze.
A woman in a cream-colored suit stood beside a distant wall.
Even after seven years, Victoria recognized her sister.
"Elena!"
The woman raised one trembling hand.
Then she looked toward the road in fear.
A black SUV passed between them.
When it was gone, Elena had disappeared.
Victoria ran across the street, but only found a folded cafe napkin beneath the plants.
Three words were written on it.
Do not trust Conrad.
Lucas grabbed Victoria's hand.
His small fingers were shaking.
"Those men took her before."
"What men?"
"The men who said my mother was supposed to be dead."
A photograph slipped from Lucas's pocket.
It showed Conrad standing outside the shelter where Lucas and Elena had lived.
Lucas looked up at Victoria and whispered, "Your husband is the man we've been running from."
