CHAPTER 2 — The Husband Who Recognized the Boy

Victoria took Lucas to a private clinic.

DNA testing confirmed he was Elena's son and Victoria's biological nephew.

The doctor cleaned his injured hands and treated the bruises on his back. Lucas admitted he had escaped through a window after men entered their shelter room.

Victoria called the police.

She did not call Conrad.

But her husband arrived within an hour.

He entered the clinic with an attorney and two security guards.

"Victoria, step away from that child."

Lucas hid behind her.

"That's him."

Conrad claimed Lucas was part of an extortion scheme. He said criminals had studied Elena's disappearance and manufactured the matching clip.

"The DNA test says he's my nephew."

"DNA laboratories make mistakes."

Victoria had never heard fear in Conrad's voice before.

Then he noticed the clip in Lucas's hand.

His expression changed.

He had expected that clip to remain at the bottom of a river.

Victoria pretended to doubt Lucas.

She allowed Conrad to believe she would return home and discuss everything privately.

But she kept both hair clips.

That evening, she examined them beneath a magnifying glass.

Tiny numbers were engraved behind each sapphire. When placed together, they formed the identification code for a private bank box registered to Elena.

Victoria visited the bank with Detective Laura Bennett.

Inside the box were letters Elena had written over seven years. None had reached Victoria.

There were photographs of Lucas growing from an infant into a frightened little boy.

The final item was a memory card.

Its video showed Conrad meeting Dr. Matthew Crane, the physician who declared Elena dead.

Conrad handed him an envelope.

"Once Elena is legally dead, her company shares pass to Victoria."

Dr. Crane hesitated.

"And if she survives?"

Conrad looked directly toward the hidden camera.

"Then make sure she spends the rest of her life somewhere no one will believe her."
