CHAPTER 3 — The Sister Declared Insane

Elena survived the crash with a head injury.

A farmer found her near the river and took her to a small clinic. She remembered only her first name and that she was pregnant.

Months later, she gave birth to Lucas.

Her memories returned gradually.

When she contacted Conrad, he told her Victoria had taken control of the family company and wanted Elena declared dead.

He promised to help her privately.

Instead, he placed her in a psychiatric facility owned by Dr. Crane.

Elena was registered under a false name and described as a delusional homeless woman claiming to be a wealthy heiress.

She remained there for four years.

A nurse eventually discovered Elena's real identity and helped her escape with Lucas.

Since then, Conrad's investigators had followed them from shelter to shelter.

His motive was money.

Victoria and Elena had inherited equal shares of their father's jewelry company. Elena's supposed death transferred her voting rights to Victoria.

Conrad secretly used Victoria's signature to control both portions.

If Elena returned, he would lose access to more than $200 million.

Detective Bennett obtained warrants for Conrad's office and Dr. Crane's facility.

They found falsified patient records, intercepted letters and photographs tracking Elena and Lucas.

But there was no sign of Elena.

Then Victoria received a message written in the private code she and Elena invented as children.

Midnight. The old conservatory. Come alone.

Victoria recognized the location. It was where the twins hid whenever their parents argued.

Detective Bennett wanted officers surrounding the building.

Victoria agreed, but she entered alone.

Elena emerged from the darkness.

For several seconds, neither sister moved.

Then they ran into each other's arms.

Elena was thinner, and a scar crossed her forehead, but she was alive.

"I thought you betrayed me," Elena cried.

"I thought you were dead."

A phone rang inside Elena's pocket.

Conrad's voice came through the speaker.

"Touching reunion."

Victoria's blood went cold.

"You left the boy at the clinic," Conrad continued. "That was careless."

Then Lucas screamed in the background, "Aunt Victoria, don't give him the hair clips!"
